Market leader in China

From 13-16 April the annual Hortiflor, China’s most important horticultural fair, was held in Shanghai. This year, fifteen Dutch horticultural enterprises presented themselves in one prominent Holland pavilion.

The Chinese horticultural sector is quickly professionalizing, offering opportunities for Dutch experts. Providers of logistical and automation systems for growers, such as Codema and Javo, did not miss the chance to take part in the Shanghai Hortiflor. They expect to find many new customers in China. “The solutions we offer are often still unknown here,” says Gideon de Jager of Codema, who have recently opened an office in Beijing. To support their new Chinese clients, they also offer training and guidance.

Priva, specialists in climate control and process optimisation for water and energy, have been active in China for over 10 years. Most greenhouses in China with a professional climate control system contain Priva products. Priva sees major opportunities in the Chinese market. Through cooperation with Chinese partners, as well as investing in education and (demo) projects, Priva hopes to become market leader in China as it is elsewhere.

At the Hortiflor, Philips was also present, showing its new LED interlighting, which can be used in systems for closed greenhouses with layered structures, to light crops that don’t receive direct sunlight. The interlighting system has been used in the Netherlands for five years already, but has only recently been introduced in China.

Flower bulbs from Chili for China

Flower bulb supplier Van den Bos also presented itself at the Holland pavilion. From its main office in the Netherlands, Van den Bos directs a worldwide bulb cultivation and trade business. The flower bulbs they sell in China are imported from Chili. In the coming years, Van den Bos would like to move more production to Yunnan province. With this in mind, they are keeping close contacts with the Netherlands Agri-Business Support Office (NABSO) in Kunming.

The NABSO Kunming was also responsible for bringing the Dutch entrepreneurs together in the Holland pavilion, and organizing a day-long Holland seminar and a trade dinner.
